And almost always they selected clothing for comfort and that\'s something for which we can thank Katharine Hepburn. That you can present yourself in comfortable clothes and still make a personal statement.\" 16. Wide of exhibit NEW YORK CITY EXHIBITION HAILS KATHARINE HEPBURN AS A FASHION ICON A New York City exhibition hails Katharine Hepburn as a fashion icon, which at first seems odd. She loved her trademark khakis and open-collar shirt, decidedly unconventional especially in the 1930s and 1940s. The fiercely independent Hepburn famously once said: \"Anytime I hear a man say he prefers a woman in a skirt, I say, \'Try one.\'\" But skirts and dresses abound in \"Katherine Hepburn: Dressed for Stage and Screen\" at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts.\" Forty of her performance clothes, from her personal collection, are featured. She had some copies made for her personal use. \"The first thing they notice is that she had a 20-inch waist. She was 5\'7\' and half with this very very slender figure and that is the very first thing people notice,\" said Jean Druesedow, director of the Kent State University Museum, which was given 700 items from Hepburn\'s estate. The strong-willed actress known for taking charge of her career worked closely with all her designers to decide her performing wardrobe. Among the highlights is a stunning satin and duchess lace wedding gown created by Howard Greer for her role as Stella Surrege in \"The Lake.\" The 1933 production was her first major Broadway role and also a huge flop. Critic Dorothy Parker described her performance as running \"the gamut of emotion from A to B.\" \"I think she kept it because later in the Turner documentary, she said that \'The Lake\' taught her one of the most important lessons of her professional life: That when you\'re the star, it\'s your responsibility. What happens to the play and what happens to you. That was something she never forgot. I tend to think she kept that costume from \'The Lake\' as a kind of significant lesson, reminder,\" said Druesedow. The exhibition opens Thursday.
