'Audrey Hepburn (4 May 1929 - 20 January 1993) was an iconic Academy Award-winning actress, fashion model and humanitarian. Born Audrey Kathleen Ruston in Brussels, Belgium, she was the only child of John Victor Hepburn-Ruston, an Anglo Irish banker, and Baroness Ella van Heemstra, a Dutch aristocrat descended from French and English kings. Her father later appended the name Hepburn to his surname, and Audrey\'s surname became Hepburn-Ruston. She had two half-brothers, Alexander and Ian Quarles van Ufford, by her mother\'s first marriage to a Dutch nobleman. Audrey Hepburn is known today not only for amazing contribution to the American cinema but also a gentle soul with a heart of gold. But her journey was never an easy one and she was never the one to just give up even with the greatest of difficulties looming over her. Her first stumbling block to cope with the failing marriage of her parents when she was very young and her father then leaving the family. Audrey, despite that was there for him, supporting him financially until death. Audrey went through endless struggles at the time of World War II and even developed health issues like malnutrition, edema, respiratory problems and acute anæmia but nothing could stop the determined Audrey. Later after the war, when she aimed to become prima ballerina, she was told she wasn\'t fit for it and she decided to take up acting. She needed to support her family financially and working as a London chorus girl appeared a viable option. She later started going for small roles in films until her first important supporting role in the film, The Secret People. Audrey\'s rise to fame started from there and her first major role as a leading actress was in the film Roman Holiday. Subsequently, other films like Wait until Dark, Charade, My Fair Lady and Breakfast at Tiffany\'s happened that gave us the Audrey Hepburn that we know today. Audrey Hepburn left a mark as an actress in the world of Hollywood and at the same time came across as a pure and beautiful human being inside out. Her own sufferings helped her understand the pain of those around her and her simplicity in everything she did made her a role model of every girl then and does so till date.
