'Hello The Way We Wore Fans, We have a special episode for you today, Doris interviews the very important and talented designer Kevan Hall. Hall has been designing since the 80s, and has created amazing catwalk moments with his designs. He has dressed Michelle Obama, Shakira, Viola Davis, and Sandra Oh, to name a few. His designs are beautifully crafted, elegant, and fresh with color and shape. He truly is a designer in every since of the word. We would like to thank Kevan and his wife Debbie for allowing us to film in his studio amongst his gorgeous gowns and ready-to-wear. Apologies for the echo sound quality. The studio was huge with high ceilings and the sound test we did, did not give us any indication of the problem. There is a tab on the bottom that allows for captions (sub-titles) so hopefully that will help decipher some of what was said. We will have this issue resolved in future episodes. Aside from design, Kevan is an advocate for emerging African American Designers, and he along with other FIDM alumni have established The Black Design Collective, which provides a scholarship to designers beginning their career, Desert Monet-Hickman was the first recipient of this $10,000 scholarship. Hall also in the wake of COVID-19 has shifted his business to making masks and designing hospital scrubs for medical personal. You can buy his amazing printed masks on Etsy (https://www.etsy.com/shop/KevanCares). Kevan also shares his knowledge of African American designers and their impact they have had on style and in the overall fashion industry, designers like: Willi Smith, Patrick Kelly, Fabrice, Stephen Burrows, Scott Barrie, and Ann Lowe. All these talented artists created garments that defined their decade and were on the forefront when it came to fabrics and patterns, as well as relating to the younger generation.
