'UPSC IAS Economy class - Food processing industry in India by R John Victor  The Food Processing industry is a sunrise sector and is vital to India’s development, primarily due to the linkages and synergies it promotes between the two pillars of our economy - industry and agriculture. The sector in India includes fruit and vegetables; spices; meat and poultry; milk and milk products, alcoholic beverages, fisheries, grain processing and other consumer product groups such as confectionery, chocolates, cocoa products, soya-based products, mineral water and high-protein foods  India’s $ 600 billion food processing industry is expected to grow three-fold by 2020. India currently ranks second in terms of global food production, next only to China.  Mega Food park is a project to boost food processing sector in India. It seeks to ensure food security, increase farm incomes and create rural employment Following are the benefits of Mega Food parks: • Increase GDP- Food processing sector is expected to attract $33 billion by 2024 • Increase farm incomes and boost export revenues  • Ensure Food security- boost production of pulses, millets, oil seeds etc • Create massive employment in rural areas, especially low skill labour • Empower poor people and women • Boost allied agriculture sector- Dairy Farming, Poultry, Horticulture etc Recent measures taken by government • SAMPADA scheme- integrated scheme to boost food processing industries • Integrated cold chain and value addition infrastructure • Create more Food based Special economic zones (SEZ) • Use Railways to create forward and backward linkages • Spice parks eg: Puttady, Keraka'
